Leeds United’s hunt for a new goalkeeper has taken them to Real Madrid. As reported on Friday night, just after Leeds had defeated Derby County 2-0 at Elland Road, Kiko Casilla was fast emerging as a Leeds transfer target.
The Yorkshire Evening Post reported that Leeds were ready to buy the Spaniard out of his final 18 months contracted at the Bernabeu.
The 32-year-old would provide serious competition for the talented but inconsistent Bailey Peacock-Farrell and Leeds fans were certainly excited at the prospect of bringing in such a player.
If they do sign the player, with a medical likely to take place early in the week, it would largely be down to Thibaut Courtois’ move to Real Madrid.
As reported by ESPN, Chelsea sold their Belgian giant to Real for £35 million in the summer. The deal also saw Mateo Kovacic head to Stamford Bridge on loan and the 6ft 6ins star was charged with replacing the inconsistent Keylor Navas between the Madrid sticks.
That appears to have been the beginning of the end for Casilla.
It seems he was more than happy to continue remaining the second-choice stopper at Real Madrid. However, dropping to third in line appears to have made him available.
Leeds United will be happy to jump on this opportunity.
