Thiago Silva reacts to Raphinha display in Brazil draw
Thiago Silva has claimed to UOL that Raphinha was amongst the players to show a quality that he has rarely seen from new additions to the Brazil national team after the Leeds United star made his second appearance for his country on Sunday.
Tite’s men played out a goalless draw with Colombia. They sit six points clear at the top of the South American qualifying group after 10 games.
With four points in two games, it has been a fairly successful break for Brazil so far.
But for Raphinha, it will be remembered as a pivotal moment in his career.
The winger made his debut in the 3-1 win over Venezuela, coming off the bench to have a hand in all three goals while also providing two assists.
His display was not enough to earn the Leeds man a first start for Sunday’s clash with Colombia. But he, once again, came off the bench and took a lot of the plaudits.
Globo Esporte handed the 24-year-old the highest rating of any Brazilian player.
And when asked about the Leeds talisman and fellow newcomer Antony, Thiago Silva insisted that he was extremely impressed.
“If we had managed to win, we would be talking more about them,” he told UOL.
“The boys showed a quality that I have hardly seen in more than ten years with the Brazilian national team [of newcomers]. It’s really cool to see Raphinha and Antony showing personality. In terms of rapport, it’s a little lacking, but the individual is at a high level.”
Leeds fans will feel plenty of pride seeing Raphinha shine for Selecao
Given the amazing players Thiago has played alongside, it says a lot that Raphinha brought something to the table the defender has rarely seen.
But it may not come as a surprise to the Elland Road faithful. He has been outstanding ever since his arrival in the Premier League.
And he seems to have taken his game to another level this term. He has been the shining light in a difficult start to the campaign for Marcelo Bielsa’s side.
Leeds fans have always been fairly realistic about what the future holds for Raphinha. So they will take a lot of pride in seeing him make such an impact for his national team off the back of a brilliant run for the Whites.
