Eddie Howe has paid tribute to Newcastle United duo Mark Gillespie and Paul Dummett ahead of the clash with Everton.
At his pre-match press conference, Howe was asked if he has any unsung heroes in his ranks and picked out the homegrown pair.
Neither man has played a minute of Premier League football this season, with Dummett’s only gametime coming in the EFL Cup.
Gillespie has not even played in that competition, and his only action has come in Premier League 2, as an experienced player dropping into the youth competition.

Howe on Dummett Gillespie
He answered: “Whenever you see a squad, the manager will always say there are unsung heroes.
“One who maybe don’t get the acclaim and the praise nationally or even amongst your own supporters, but you see the value of them behind the scenes. We’ve got a number of those here.
“When I think of Mark Gillespie and Paul Dummett; local lads who have come through and know how much the club means to them. Also how much they mean to us.
“They’re just incredible guys who love their football club and we’re lucky to have them here. I’m picking two, I could probably pick more but they’re the two who spring to mind.”
Like any manager, Howe will know that if you have players who are hardly playing and they are happy and adding to the good environment around the place, it is priceless.
Newcastle are on an exciting journey but it is important they have players embedded in the camp who know what the club means to the fans and the area.
That is what Gillespie and Dummett seem to be doing and who knows, there may come a point in the season when they are called upon.
