‘They’re ahead’… Arsenal are favourites to sign £53m midfielder this summer

The January transfer window will probably come and go without any new incomings at Arsenal, but that doesn’t mean the transfer team at the Emirates aren’t hard at work.

Indeed, let’s not forget, just days after the window closed last year, we had reports emerging about Arsenal working on the Declan Rice deal.

Transfer windows may only open at certain times of the year, but the hard work never stops, and Arsenal will already have some targets for the summer lined up.

One such target may well be Martin Zubimendi, the Spaniard has been named as someone Arsenal are keen on for quite some time now, and speaking on The Done Deal Show, Ben Jacobs has now claimed that the Gunners are ahead of other suitors in the race for Zubimendi heading into the summer.

Jacobs shared what he knows about the £53m man.

“They definitely won’t be able to convince Real Sociedad or the player now, and then in the summer it’s about whether or not he feels it’s worth staying another season or moving, because he’s quite settled at the moment. I think Arsenal will be there in the summer for Zubimendi, and they’re ahead of suitors if the player is prepared to leave, it’s between Arsenal and the player for the summer, not between Arsenal and another club,” Jacobs said.

Will he leave?

By the sounds of it, Arsenal are favourites to sign Zubimendi this summer, and with a release clause in place, club-to-club negotiations aren’t going to be a problem.

However, as Jacobs says, whether or not the player himself actually wants to leave is another story.

Zubimendi is very settled at Real Sociedad, and as a local lad with a lot of Basque pride, he may not be too keen to jump ship just yet.

This is certainly a story to watch heading into the summer.
