‘They should’ve got him’… Pundit says Arsenal should’ve signed ‘amazing’ player in January

Ivan Toney to Arsenal was the big rumour of the January transfer window.

The Gunners were strongly linked with a move for the Brentford striker throughout the January transfer window, but, frustratingly, a deal never came to fruition.

Speaking on Premier League Productions, Clinton Morrison has been discussing Arsenal’s pursuit of Toney, and while he says that a deal would’ve been very difficult, he says that he agrees with the point of view that Arsenal should’ve signed Toney last month.

Arsenal should’ve signed Ivan Toney

Morrison spoke about the striker.

“I agree but I don’t think they would’ve got Toney for £50m, I think you would’ve been looking at £100m, I know what you’re saying but Brentford could’ve played it hard, I agree that they should’ve got him, but I could never see him leaving in the January window,” Morrison said.

Easier said than done

Morrison is right, Arsenal probably could’ve done with signing Toney last month, but getting that deal done wasn’t an easy task.

As Morrison says, Brentford weren’t in any sort of rush to sell their star player, and with the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability rules showing a bit of bite in recent times, Arsenal couldn’t afford to spend massively after a huge summer outlay.

There’s a reason Arsenal continue to be linked with Toney, he’s a player they really like, and he’s a player who would make them better, but it’s never easy to sign a player of this calibre in a January transfer window, especially when Brentford are looking over their shoulders and pondering potential relegation.

This would’ve been the ideal January signing for Arsenal, but, ultimately, there’s a reason the Gunners didn’t get this deal done in the winter window.

Arsenal are still in the title race without Toney, but they would’ve been in a much better spot if they did land the ‘amazing’ striker last month.
