‘They love’: David Ornstein says that Arsenal absolutely adore 24-year-old La Liga player

Arsenal’s midfield isn’t as strong as you’d necessarily want a Premier League title contender’s to be.

Declan Rice has been brilliant this season, but Kai Havertz continues to struggle to adapt while Thomas Partey has been injured for a long time now and Jorginho can be very hit and miss.

There’s been plenty of talk about Arsenal signing a new striker this month, but perhaps a new midfielder is what they need.

Speaking on Five, David Ornstein has been discussing the chances of Arsenal signing a new midfielder this month, and he says we may need to see departures for someone else to be brought in.

Interestingly, when discussing potential targets, Ornstein named Martin Zubimendi as a player that Arsenal love, although he’s not heard anything about that deal progressing recently.

Ornstein shared what he knows about the midfielder.

“We would need a departure from the midfield to bring somebody in. We know they love Martin Zubimendi from Real Sociedad, they looked at signing him last January, he has a release clause that is not extortionate for a very good player. He wanted to stay, he stayed until the summer and has seen how things have worked out, Real Sociedad are in the Champions League knockout stages, and I don’t hear of that one progressing,” Ornstein said.

Zubimendi to Arsenal would be interesting

It doesn’t sound as though this deal is imminent, but it has to be said that Zubimendi joining Arsenal is a very intriguing prospect.

Indeed, much like Declan Rice, Zubimendi does a lot of his best work in that holding midfield position, so perhaps his arrival would allow the former West Ham man to play a bit further forward.

It has felt in recent weeks like Rice has been shackled, so perhaps Zubimendi would be an important player to come in and help unlock Rice in an attacking sense and allow him to play with a bit more freedom.

This may be one to keep an eye on.
