'They have a chance to close this deal': Romano provides update on 'incredible' £40m Arsenal target
Fabrizio Romano has provided an update on the state of play regarding Arsenal and Youri Tielemans.
The Gunners have been linked with the £40million-rated Leicester midfielder for a long time now.
However, Arsenal have reportedly cooled their interest in Tielemans in recent days.
The Gunners have already snapped up a new midfielder this summer, landing Fabio Vieira from Porto.
Therefore, another midfielder isn’t as urgent a priority as a new centre-forward.
Mikel Arteta has just one senior striker in his ranks – Eddie Nketiah – so that area urgently needs strengthening.
Romano, writing in German outlet Wett Freunde, said Arsenal are still in contact with Tielemans’ camp and Leicester.
The Gunners are currently prioritising the Gabriel Jesus negotiations.
They could potentially switch to the “incredible” midfielder afterwards.
“Other clubs are also exploring”
However, Romano urged Arsenal to be quick, as other clubs could potentially be joining the fray for Tielemans.
“They’re still in contact with Youri Tielemans’ camp,” wrote the transfer guru.
“They are still in contact with Leicester but they have one priority at the moment and that is a striker.
“They know they need a striker in the market at this moment and Gabriel Jesus is the player they want. So they’re working on it.
“Tielemans is a player they’ve always had on their list.
“And they think that with his contract at Leicester set to expire next summer he could be an opportunity to keep in the market for the coming weeks.
As far as I know, they have to be quick because other clubs are also exploring the possibility with Youri Tielemans.
“Nothing serious or advanced at the moment but Tielemans could be an option for many clubs.
If Man United have a problem with the Frenkie de Jong deal, I think Tielemans could be one of the options if Arsenal don’t complete the negotiations.
“Arsenal have been at it for a long time and they have a chance to close this deal, but they have to be quick.
“So it also depends on how quickly the deal with Gabriel Jesus goes through.”
