Paul Merson wrote in his column on Sportskeeda about the game this weekend between Leicester City and Newcastle United.

The Magpies picked up their first win of the season against Burnley last week. That was a massive result for Eddie Howe, but they can’t just sit and be proud of it. Newcastle are still in massive trouble and they have to build on that positive result against the Clarets.

Up next for them is Leicester, who are much more difficult to beat than Burnley. The Foxes have been poor this season, but they have immense quality in their squad. On their day, they can blow any team away, but Merson has urged Newcastle to go for it as well.

The Englishman believes that the Magpies have to go for a win every time they play now as draws are pointless for them in their bid for survival.

Paul Merson: Newcastle have to win, they can’t even afford to draw

He wrote in his predictions piece: “Newcastle have got to highlight the importance of this game. At the start of the Premier League season, you’d think this would be a tough game for them. Now, you’re going to Leicester expecting to score at least one goal.

“There’s no point playing for a draw – Newcastle need to have a go, score goals, and hope their defenders keep it tight.

“They’re in trouble at the moment and they need to make this game count. Leicester are all over the place at the moment but with Newcastle’s problems this season, Brendan Rodgers should be able to lead his team to a victory.

“Prediction: Leicester City 2-1 Newcastle United.”

Merson, in a way, is right. Newcastle are in a terrible position at the moment and they need wins to catch up with the teams above them in the Premier League table. Howe will certainly set his side up with three points in mind, but it’s never easy.

A draw against Leicester at the King Power is not a bad result at all. The Foxes are a very dangerous side and considering how shaky Newcastle’s defence has been, Jamie Vardy will be licking his lips.

The big incentive for Newcastle is that they could be just one point off 17th if they win the game tomorrow. That would be a humongous boost for them, but on the flip side, a loss could push them to the bottom of the table and potentially six points away from safety.
