‘There’s no need’…Alan Shearer thinks £17m Spurs player made a big mistake v West Ham and it’s not Udogie

Tottenham lost to West Ham United last night and Alan Shearer was far from impressed with what he saw from goalkeeper, Guglielmo Vicario.

The Italian stopped has been in fine form since signing for Spurs in the summer for around £17m and up until last night, had looked one of the best in the league.

However, the Italian made an error in the second half which allowed James Ward-Prowse to fire in to win the game for the Hammers. Vicario came sliding out at the feet of Jarrod Bowen and instead of clearing the decks, simply palmed the ball to the oncoming Ward-Prowse.

And watching on for Amazon Prime Sport, former Newcastle striker Alan Shearer felt the Spurs stopper should have done miles better.

“I think he should come and collect that. There’s no need for him to come out like that and punch that away. He knows in the English game that a forward can’t go sliding in anymore, 20 years ago maybe but it’s a gift,” Shearer said.

Vicario can move on quickly

This must be the first error that Vicario has made since he signed for Tottenham. He has been brilliant and there’s been hardly any flaws to his game.

Interestingly here, Shearer mentions the stopper collecting it but it was a back pass, so there was no way the Spurs stopper could have done that.

However, Shearer is right in that Vicario might have got a bigger bit of contact on the ball and cleared the danger somewhat better.

But, regardless of this error, Vicario can hold his head high and move on quickly. All goalkeepers make the odd error and it’s about putting them behind you and getting to the next game.
