Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Harry Winks believes “there’s a good chance” Spurs teammate Cristian Romero can become of the best defenders in the world.

Rated highly after winning the Serie A defender of the year award last campaign, managing director of football Fabio Paratici managed to strike a loan deal with Atalanta for the 23-year-old’s services.

Romero has been a key player for Tottenham since joining the club. His recent absence proved a huge blow for Spurs.

The Argentina international spent three months on the sidelines due to a hamstring injury he picked up on international duty.

However, Romero returned last weekend and made a big impact in the FA Cup victory over Brighton.

On Friday, Antonio Conte admitted he was too important not to play a third game in a row.

“I know very well to play three games in eight days could be not a risk but take a bit of a risk, we need (Romero and Son Heung-min,” football.london quotes him as saying.

“They’re important players for us, especially at the back. Dier at this moment is out and Romero has to play.”

“His technical ability is top”

Winks, also speaking to football.london, sung Romero’s praises.

“He’s a very good player, Cuti,” said Winks. “Since he has been in his technical ability is top.

“He’s aggressive defensively and he’s a really, really good player. And someone we’ve missed the past few months when he has been injured.

“Hopefully he can stay fit now and continue to build on that because he’s definitely a very good centre-back and a player we’re happy to have.”

Tipped to become one of the best defenders in the world, Winks is confident the Argentine can meet those expectations.

“I suppose it’s down to him as he has the ability and has the capabilities of course,” he added. “Everyone has that ability when you’re playing at the top level to be that good.

“It’s finding the consistency and staying fit. But he’s a top player and I’m sure if he stays fit and continues to improve under the manager then there’s a good chance.”
