'There is no doubt': Frank Lampard now makes claim about Richarlison after Everton lose 4-0 last night
Everton lost 4-0 to Minnesota United on their pre-season tour yesterday and have not yet replaced their Brazilian talisman.
Their only signing this summer has been James Tarkowski on a free transfer from Burnley after narrowly avoiding relegation last season.
And Lampard spoke about Richarlison in an interview with the club’s official website after the defeat, adding he was not happy at all with the performance.
Lampard says Richarlison exit has impacted Everton
The players have to work and understand we were in a relegation battle for a big portion of last season. We had an amazing night [against Crystal Palace] and an amazing run but, as soon as that finished, I put it to bed very quickly, so the players have to put it to bed as well, because we were in that fight for a reason,” he said.
“And if we don’t want to be in that situation again, they have to better and I have to be better. As a club, it [the Minnesota game] reinforced the situation in terms of what we need to do with the squad, because it has to be stronger that what we saw tonight.
“You want to get better and personnel is key. There is no doubt about it. When you think of where we were last year, we have lost a big player in Richarlison…we wish him well, but our club now continues. We know there is a void in forward areas, we are short in numbers there. Also, through the team, there are things I want to strengthen.
“A club like Everton has to have a competitive squad. The players must be up for the fact they have to fight to play in the team. That should give them a lot to think about on the plane home, because it’s certainly given me a lot to think about.”
Richarlison almost dragged Everton out of the mire singlehandedly last season and his exit was a huge blow for Lampard.
The club got decent money but it is about who they can get with that and how much of it was needed just to balance the books.
As it stands, it could be another tricky season for Everton.
It is not wise to read too much into pre-season but a 4-0 defeat to an MLS side is hardly an ideal position to be in with the new campaign looming ever closer.
