Viktor Gyokeres has arrived at Arsenal to fill a position Mikel Arteta desperately needed a new face in.
The Gunners actually went without a recognised striker for the second half of last season after injuries to Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus, trusting Mikel Merino to slot in – the Spaniard did well, scoring notable goals against Real Madrid, Chelsea and Liverpool.
However, Havertz is now back in action, leaving many to wonder whether the German can play with the £64m arrival from Sporting CP at Arsenal – or whether Arteta will have to leave one out.
Viktor Gyokeres has actually experienced similar issues in the past, and interestingly found a way to make an impact from the left.
Viktor Gyokeres can play on the left for Arsenal
The Sweden international and Havertz can certainly coexist in this Arsenal XI.
Gyokeres has previously made 36 appearances on the left wing during his time at Brighton, St. Pauli and Brommapojkarna – recording an impressive haul of 15 goals and five assists.
| Position | Games | Goals | Assists |
|---|---|---|---|
| Striker | 269 | 167 | 56 |
| Left Winger | 36 | 15 | 5 |
| Right Winger | 19 | 8 | 3 |
| Second Striker | 5 | 2 | 0 |
| Left Midfield | 1 | 0 | 0 |
| Right Midfield | 1 | 0 | 0 |
The Swede is a powerful runner who often tends to make darting runs down the channels even when playing centrally, so starting the 27-year-old out wide, where he can look to cut inside in similar fashion to how Kylian Mbappe usually operates, could be a wise move from Arteta.
Interestingly, Arsenal initially planned to use Havertz in midfield upon his arrival from Chelsea, so it is also possible that the Germany international is moved into a No.8 role for Gyokeres – who had a quiet debut – to start at striker.
Viktor Gyokeres could help Mikel Arteta kill two birds with one stone
Having finally signed Gyokeres, Arsenal are also keen to find competition for Gabriel Martinelli – hence why talks have taken place over a deal for Rodrygo of Real Madrid.
Leandro Trossard could also leave, which would make the need for a new left winger even stronger.
However, the fact Gyokeres has some experience of playing on the left could help to solve this issue if Arsenal fail to sign a new forward for that position, while Noni Madueke can also play there if need be, despite preferring the right flank.
