Theo Walcott has told TalkSPORT (Tuesday, 10.20am) that he has no regrets at choosing to leave Everton to rejoin Southampton on loan, after a move was confirmed on deadline day.

Walcott, 31, left Southampton back in 2006 to join Arsenal as a 17-year-old – after the teenager scored five goals in 22 senior Saints outings. He went on to score 108 goals in 398 appearances for Arsenal, winning the FA Cup three times.

A move to Everton came about under Sam Allardyce in January 2018 but just 11 goals in 85 Toffees appearances has seen the 47-time England international drop down the pecking order behind Richarlison, Bernard, Alex Iwobi and others.

Walcott was asked by Jim White on TalkSPORT if he regretted leaving Everton to join Southampton – and if he had any regrets over his time at Goodison Park – but the £20million (Telegraph) signing stated he has none.

“It’s very sad, but quite exciting for myself, going back to where it all started,” Walcott said. “I just couldn’t turn it down. Everton made this deal happen and it means a lot. People maybe thinking he’s going back to settle down but that’s not the case.

“I can still play at the highest level, I keep myself in good shape. I feel younger than I actually am. I have no regrets at all, I’m popping in today and it will hit me then. Carlo is a brilliant appointment for the club but unfortunately it hasn’t worked out.”

TBR’s view – Walcott loan perfect at this point in his career

As is rejoining Southampton. Walcott’s career had entered the dangerous realms of hitting a standstill. At 31, the winger needs to be playing week in, week out to further his career and get the most out of his remaining career.

A move back to Southampton, where he broke through, has all the necessary potential to be a top move for the ex-Arsenal man. Regular game time and still very quick, Walcott could regain his confidence and match sharpness.
