In a window that may have defined January in Premier League terms perfectly, many clubs were in action adding both depth and quality to their sides, in what is one of the most competitive, unpredictable seasons ever seen. January 2016 was a month for the lower table sides to bring in additions while big clubs maintained their distance from any outside contact. The new TV deal also allowed for a big spending month with teams in the relegation fight taking a financial risk in the hope they receive a share of the TV jackpot next season. However, who made the best signings, both in terms of value and potential impact?
5. Jonjo Shelvey
Having signed for Newcastle for a reported £12 million, the St. James Park faithful will be hoping Shelvey’s passing ability will inspire survival for the Geordie side. With a 92% pass accuracy on his debut, Shelvey has impressed the Toon Army however, pundit and famous Newcastle fan; Alan Shearer, correctly nullified his new admirers by declaring ‘the jury is still out’. Newcastle supporters will be aware that with all the quality the England international brings, lapses in concentration defensively, poor work-rate and the odd act of misconduct are all part of Shelvey’s arsenal. The 23-year-old talent can be a game changer at times, but with the good certainly comes the bad and the ugly. The Magpies will certainly be hoping that they see much more of the former.
