The three best candidates for the vacant Aston Villa managerial role

David Wagner

This is the wildcard selection, which was previously thought to be Bristol City’s Lee Johnson, but now may well be the man who is currently in charge of the team at the top – Huddersfield Town’s David Wagner.

The German born, USA international Wagner is in fact in his very first managerial position at the John Smith’s Stadium, previously being reserve manager at Borussia Dortmund under both Jurgen Klopp and Thomas Tuchel.

Due to the way the German football system operates, Wagner actually guided Dortmund’s reserves into the third tier of German football – the UK equivalent of League One.  Wagner kept Huddersfield in his first season in charge, before this season setting the Terriers off like a house on fire as the Yorkshire side are surprise table toppers in October.

Wagner has won manager of the month and already is being touted as the next big thing in management, this Villa job being the first “major” post with which he is seriously linked. However, if I were Wagner, I would be inclined to stay in Yorkshire with Huddersfield, for the time being at least.

They are currently showing no signs of slowing up – so why leave a side winning at the top of the league? Let’s be fair – if the season ended today HTFC would be in the Premier League and Villa would very nearly be in League One.
