It was another good day at the office for Manchester United yesterday, who saw off Aston Villa thanks to Scott McTominay’s winner.

The Scottish midfielder climbed off the bench to once again get a crucial winner for Erik ten Hag’s side and breathe new life into United’s push for Champions League football.

Of course, McTominay got the headlines for his winner again. But there was another goal for the ever-improving Rasmus Hojlund, who once again looked a big threat in the final third.

And speaking about Hojlund on TalkSPORT today, former United goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel has lauded the big striker and suggested he never had any doubts over his ability.

Peter Schmeichel says Rasmus Hojlund is the real deal

Speaking about his fellow Dane, United legend Schmeichel was full of praise for the 21-year-old striker.

“He’s coming into Man United at the age of 20. Him being from Denmark, we kind of look at him in the same lines as Erling Haaland. When Haaland was this age he was at Salzburg, so Haaland has had a really good slow introduction into his career. He went Dortmund and then went big to Man City. Hojlund it was only two and a half years he was in the Copenhagen squad and they signed a striker and told him to go back to the under-19’s. Sturm Graz came in and told him he was going to get first-team football, he went there for seven months, nine months at Atalanta and now he’s at Man United. It’s gone really, really quickly for him,” Schmeichel said.

“But at no point have I been in any doubt that this lad is the real deal. He has everything in his locker. I have seen this for a year now, when he broke into the Danish team, I have seen this guy, you know when you see something that is very special, it doesn’t come along very often. That’s what I’ve seen in him.”

Getting better and better

All young strikers need time to develop and settle, and even more so when it comes to leading the line for a team like Manchester United.

Rasmus Hojlund has been eased into things slowly by Erik ten Hag but really seems to have hit his stride now.

United look well set for the future at the moment. The three of Rashford, Hojlund and Garnacho is a dangerous trio and if they could somehow get Antony firing as well, they’d be lethal in more games.

Hojlund, as Schmeichel says, looks the business right now and could well end up ending the season with plenty of goals to show for his efforts.
