‘The other day’: West Ham midfielder makes comment about Harry Kane after last night’s defeat at Anfield

West Ham United midfielder Flynn Downes has made a comment about Tottenham Hotspur forward Harry Kane after last night’s defeat at Anfield.

The Hammers were beaten 1-0 at Liverpool last night after a brilliant header by Darwin Nunez.

Downes was handed his full Premier League debut against the Reds and David Moyes’ men will be kicking themselves for not taking an opportunity to earn a point.

Joe Gomez was judged to have fouled Jarrod Bowen in the Liverpool penalty area and the Hammers man stepped up from the spot. But his effort was denied by Alisson Becker and they missed a huge chance to equalise.

Downes spoke about Bowen’s penalty miss after the game and mentioned Kane’s effort against Eintracht Frankfurt last week.

Downes makes comment about Kane

“It’s football, everybody misses penalties [at one time or another],” Downes told West Ham’s official website.

“Harry Kane missed one the other day, it happens. Jarrod has been unbelievable and he’s just got to stick at it.

“Then Tomáš [Soucek] has had that one blocked by [James] Milner and Alisson at the end and that’s the luck we didn’t get tonight.

“On another day you get those kind of things and they go in. We had chances, but we just couldn’t get the finish.”

Kane is arguably one of the best spot-kick takers in the world but has missed two penalties this season.

The one Downes is referring to is the effort he blazed over the crossbar against Frankfurt last week. The England captain was also denied by Nottingham Forest goalkeeper Dean Henderson back in August.

Bowen will be gutted to have missed the opportunity last night but Downes is right, even the best penalty-takers miss on the odd occasion.

The England international was in the thick of the action once again last night and nearly set up Soucek for a late equaliser. But the midfielder’s effort was blocked brilliantly by James Milner.

Moyes will certainly take the positives from a spirited display last night as his side prepare to host Bournemouth on Monday night.
