The one player Tottenham really need to sign on deadline day has worn his side’s captain’s armband this season

Tottenham Hotspur have already enjoyed a positive month in terms of incomings, with Timo Werner and Radu Dragusin signing for the club.

But there remains the need to bring in a new central midfielder and snapping up Conor Gallagher ahead of today’s deadline would make this transfer window an incredible one for Spurs.

Rumours linking Gallagher with a move to north London simply won’t go away, with Tottenham said to be weighing up a last-minute move for the Chelsea star

Reports have claimed that the Blues would be willing to sell Gallagher for a fee worth around £50 million as they bid to stay on the right side of Financial Fair Play (FFP).

And while there are question marks over Gallagher’s desire to leave Chelsea, this is a signing that would transform Ange Postecoglou’s midfield.

Tottenham need to sign Gallagher on deadline day

It may be wishful thinking, but if Tottenham were to place a bid Chelsea simply can’t refuse, Gallagher would significantly bolster Postecoglou’s options in midfield.

The 23-year-old would be capable of playing in the box-to-box role and compete with Pape Matar Sarr for a place in the side.

Gallagher has also shown he can play in an advanced role during his spell at Crystal Palace, where he managed 11 goal contributions during the 2021-22 campaign.

But what arguably makes him the perfect option for Postecoglou, above all, is his work-rate off the ball.

The Englishman is a tireless runner and he would help to provide added energy in the middle of the park for Spurs.

Tottenham would face a difficult task when it comes to convincing Gallagher to leave Stamford Bridge ahead of the deadline.

He’s captained the Blues regularly in the absence of Reece James this season. Chelsea are also set to face Liverpool in the EFL Cup final next month.

Yet, if there is even the slightest chance that Spurs could land the England international today, they simply have to throw their hat into the ring or at least test Chelsea’s resolve.
