'The man': Chris Sutton stunned by £100k-a-week Liverpool player's display tonight

Liverpool defender Joel Matip has been praised by BBC Sport pundit Chris Sutton for his display against Ajax.

The Reds were desperate to get back to winning ways in Tuesday night’s Champions League clash at Anfield.

Liverpool have endured a tough start in the Premier League and lost 4-1 to Napoli in Europe last week.

The Reds began brightly and went ahead 17 minutes in, Mohamed Salah sweeping home Diogo Jota’s pass.

However, Ajax – who had barely threatened – equalised in the 27th minute.

Steven Berghuis played in Mohammed Kudus, who thumped home off the underside of the bar.

Liverpool worked hard to try and restore their lead, but they had no joy for most of the match.

Then, in the 89th minute, Kostas Tsimikas whipped a corner towards Matip, who duly headed over the line.

Although an Ajax defender stopped the ball from hitting the back of the net, the goal was rightly given.

And BBC Sport pundit Chris Sutton loved what he saw from the £100,000-a-week star.

“He nearly scored a header earlier in the half, Sutton said on BBC Radio 5 Live (13/9, 21:53).

“He should have scored the header earlier in the half.

“The ball is clearly over the line, Matip’s the man! Just how big a goal could that be for Liverpool?”

Matip was expected to come back into the Liverpool XI after Joe Gomez’s poor display against Napoli.

And the 31-year-old not only delivered at the back, but also grabbed the absolutely crucial winner.
