Tottenham Hotspur took on Manchester United in their return to Premier League action yesterday, drawing 1-1 after Steven Bergwijn’s first-half strike was cancelled out by a second-half penalty from Bruno Fernandes.
But were it not for VAR, Tottenham could have ended up conceding another penalty.
Fernandes went near a challenging Eric Dier and referee John Moss pointed to the spot. After a video review, it became clear that the Portuguese had dived and the decision was reversed, although Moss inexplicably decided not to hand the United midfielder a yellow card for simulation.

Apart from that faux-pas, VAR worked in this situation, and Tottenham were left thankful for its successful implementation.
One former Tottenham player even commented on it on Twitter. Gary Lineker made it clear that he felt this was the exact reason for the presence of VAR to prevent extremely poor decisions like this would have been.
Tottenham will certainly be pleased by the decision, especially Jose Mourinho. The Spurs manager was incandescent with rage after the whistle was originally blown and would have been unbearable post-match had the decision not been overturned.
On this occasion, VAR worked, and Tottenham came away from a game in which they tired dramatically with a deserved share of the spoils.
