‘The gaffer always goes on’…James Maddison shares key reason behind Tottenham’s late winner v Brighton

Tottenham left it late to beat Brighton today as they scored deep into injury time once again to send the home fans into raptures.

This time around it was the turn of Brennan Johnson, who smashed in from a cross by Heung-Min Son to send the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium wild yet again.

Johnson’s finish was a mad end to what had been a tight game between two teams going all out to win it.

But in the end, it was a bit of influence from Ange Postecoglou that ensured Tottenham got the win and a big three points.

Speaking to the BBC after the game, Maddison revealed how Postecoglou’s insistence on crosses going in early was key to Johnson netting the winner.

“It’s always nice to win late, that feeling when you’re out there and it sends the fans into madness. If you could bottle that and sell it then you’d get millions, that’s why it’s so rare. We’ve done it a few times here at home with late winners so credit to Brennan [Johnson] with the winner. The gaffer always goes on about getting that first time cross in to the far post. It was just good quality all round [for the goal] and Brennan got in at the back post. It was a well worked goal,” Maddison said.

Tottenham just keep going

It’s a good old habit to have, scoring late goals to win games of football. Manchester United did it for years under Sir Alex Ferguson and now Tottenham seem to be developing a nice habit too.

For Ange Postecoglou, this was yet another huge moment in the season in what was a game they might easily have lost on another day.

As Maddison says, sometimes the little influences and details from a manager can be massive and that’s what’s happened today it seems.

Tottenham are marching on right now and in good form. More of this, and that top four place might just be theirs for the taking.
