Heading into Sunday’s contest, Manchester United fans would likely have expected to witness their side suffer yet another drubbing against Liverpool at Anfield.
However, Ruben Amorim seemingly drilled his United side to put in a brave display against Arne Slot’s side that eventually resulted in the 2-2 draw between both sides.
Goals from Lisandro Martinez and Amad Diallo as well Cody Gakpo and Mohamed Salah capped off an excellent game of football that was a reminder of why this game is the biggest English football has to offer.
If Harry Maguire had scored what was effectively a tap-in, United would have pulled off a famous victory against Liverpool.
However, Manchester United will take home a well-earned point and they should be chuffed with their showing.
The last time the Red Devils travelled to Merseyside as overwhelming underdogs as well, they drew 0-0.

Manchester United fans mock Anfield atmosphere during Liverpool draw
If Ruben Amorim’s project is to become a success, his United side will have to make a habit of putting in similarly impressive performances from technical, physical and mental standpoints.
Sky Sports reporter Adam Bate revealed that Manchester United fans mocked the atmosphere at Anfield during their draw against Liverpool.
“The United fans are chanting, ‘Where’s your famous atmosphere?’ and they have a point but it reflects the efforts of their team in this first-half.”
“They should be careful not to tempt fate though, this place can change quickly, particularly attacking the Kop in the second half.”
United supporters certainly did not tempt fate and on the balance of play, they perhaps can feel hard done by not to have won the game.
Daniel Sturridge says Manchester United showed their “true colours” against Liverpool
Daniel Sturridge was asked whether Manchester City surprised Liverpool with how well they played and while he agrees, he also feels their true quality as a side and Ruben Amorim’s system shone through.
Sturridge told Sky Sports: “Yes but when I listened to Arne Slot’s interview before the game, he said they’ve got the players and they’ve got the talent in the squad but the performances haven’t garnered the results.”
“And today they’ve shown their true colours maybe in terms of the manager’s system and how they played it, they showed a lot of fight, they showed a lot of composure on the ball and that’s been lacking in recent weeks of course.”
“They performed to a level where the manager can be proud, the players can be proud of themselves, like Bruno [Fernandes] said in his interview, this is what we can be but in turn, you have to do that every single week.”
Manchester United fans certainly had to day to remember at Anfield as the visiting side showcased that they have the potential to become a top team under Ruben Amorim one day.
