‘The boldness of the greats’: National media laud Arsenal-linked star after Euro 2020 display
Arsenal target Domenico Berardi was lauded by his national media after the Sassuolo winger played a leading role as Italy beat Switzerland at Euro 2020.
Roberto Mancini’s Azzurri secured their place in the knockout stages of the European Championship with a 3-0 win on Wednesday. And in doing so, became the first to progress from the group stage of this year’s tournament.
A brace from Berardi’s Gunners-linked teammate Manuel Locatelli handed Italy the lead either side of the break. Ciro Immobile rounded out the scoring in the final minute of regular time, to cap off a commanding Italy performance.
Berardi had a hand in Locatelli breaking the deadlock when the midfielder tapped home his cutback in the 26th-minute. The Arsenal target had made a darting run to the Switzerland byline, twisting and turning his way past defenders to play the perfect cross.
Mancini opted to rest Berardi for the final 20 minutes, but his performance would, no doubt, have delighted Arsenal. Mikel Arteta’s side have approached Sassuolo for more information on the 13-cap star’s situation, per Gazzetta dello Sport.
They face competition from Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United, though. While Sassuolo have set a €50million (£43m) asking price, after their captain scored 17 times and offered eight assists in the Serie A last season.
Berardi has begun his Euro 2020 run strongly with assists against Turkey and Switzerland. But Mancini replacing him in the 69th-minute likely cost the 26-year-old TuttoMercatoWEB’s Man of the Match in favour of Locatelli.
“The boldness of the greats, even for someone who has never wanted to leave his comfort zone,” they wrote. “Wear the gala dress as if you have always been used to the evenings at La Scala. The assist for the one to zero is a nugget.”
TBR’s view: Berardi ready for Arsenal challenge
The comfort zone TuttoMercatoWEB refer to is in Berardi previously rejecting offers to join Inter Milan and Juventus. But Gazzetta note the boyhood Juventus fan feels ready to now test himself at a top Serie A side or accept a challenge to play abroad.
Arsenal would be wise to present Berardi with the chance to test himself in the Premier League. The Sassuolo winger has taken his Serie A form into Euro 2020 and proven a star of Mancini’s dominant side.
Arteta would rue seeing Berardi line up for Tottenham or Manchester United next season. A move to Juventus or one of the Milan clubs is not thought to be on the cards. So, the Premier League could be the destination of the wing wizard taking Italy and Europe by storm.
