It was like going back to yesteryear for Liverpool fans yesterday as they got to see the likes of Fernando Torres back on the Anfield turf.

Sven Goran Eriksson was the star of the show as he completed a lifelong dream of taking charge of Liverpool for a game at Anfield.

In the end, Liverpool’s legends ran out 4-2 winners against their Ajax counterparts, completing a comeback from 2-0 down to take the spoils.

Of course, there were some star names on show for Liverpool. Notably, the duo of Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres started up front.

There was to be no dream goal for Gerrard back in front of The Kop. But Torres did manage to squeeze one home as he got the fourth to round off the win.

And after Liverpool’s social media posted a picture of Gerrard and Torres in the dressing room, the Spaniard reacted with grace and class towards his former skipper.

Torres and Gerrard a dream combination for Liverpool

It really was lovely to see Gerrard and Torres back in Liverpool red together yesterday.

In their peak, there really wasn’t many about who linked up quite as well as they did. Indeed, there was a period where it almost seemed telepathic for Gerrard and Torres and they drove the Reds past teams on their own at times.

Few will forget Torres and Gerrard ripping Manchester United apart at Old Trafford, while John Terry doesn’t have happy memories of the Spanish striker either from Anfield.

While both players might be well past their prime now in retirement, there was moments from both yesterday to please the Liverpool fans.

As for Torres’ comments here, well, it just shows how highly-respected and rated Gerrard is.

Few midfielders come close to being as good as the former Liverpool skipper. And when he had Torres in front of him, he was arguably the best in the world.
