'The best defender around': Rio Ferdinand thinks reported Tottenham target is truly 'tremendous'

Reported Tottenham Hotspur target Antonio Rudiger is “the best defender around”, according to Rio Ferdinand.

Spurs are just one of several teams reportedly eyeing the Chelsea defender, whose contract expires in summer.

Speaking on The Football Terrace this week, Dean Jones claimed Tottenham have been in touch in hope of persuading him to join in summer.

As well as Spurs, the likes of Liverpool, Manchester City and Manchester United have also been linked.

90Min reported in December that Chelsea have resigned themselves to losing Rudiger at the end of the season.

The 28-year-old has become a key part of his club’s line-up, helping his side win the Champions League last season.

Thomas Tuchel’s appointment saw the 28-year-old return to prominence after links away the previous summer.

Rudiger’s efforts have seen him make Ferdinand’s Team of the Year, and he lauded the defender on Rio Ferdinand Presents FIVE.

“Since Thomas Tuchel has come in, I think he’s been the best defender around,” said the England icon.

“Aggressive, dominates, demands from others, the crowd feed off the way he plays, all-round I think he’s been tremendous.

“The element of a new contract has focused him as well.

“I think he’s a hell of a player, whoever gets him for the new couple of years has got a great, solid player who the other players feed off.”

Can Spurs land a “£70million-rated player” for free?

Tottenham’s defence could certainly do with bolstering at the end of the season.

Although Antonio Conte is getting the best out of previously struggling players, there’s definitely scope to bring in some world-class players.

Rudiger certainly fits that bill and, if Tottenham succeed in landing him, he’d arrive to so much fanfare.

Indeed, Paul Merson wrote in the Daily Star that the Blues are effectively losing a £70million-rated player for nothing.

“Chelsea are going to miss Antonio Rudiger when he goes because it will take £60-70million to replace him,” wrote Merson.

“Rudiger is definitely leaving. If he wanted to sign a new contract he would have done it by now. There’s no chance he stays now.”
