Liverpool defender Joe Gomez is reportedly facing a spell on the sidelines.

The star has picked up a knee injury whilst on England duty, and BBC Sport say he has now withdrawn and will now have tests to determine the damage, in what is probably the last thing the Reds need at this moment in time.

Virgil van Dijk is likely out for the season after undergoing ACL surgery, while Joel Matip has a questionable injury record.

And Fabinho is also sidelined with a hamstring issue right now, although the Brazilian won’t be out for much longer.

It was very much a gamble for Liverpool to head into the 2020/21 with only three recognised senior centre-halves, and it’s one that doesn’t appear to be paying off.

The Reds might have kept hold of Dejan Lovren, but decided to cash in for just under £11 million (Independent).

At the time, most supporters accepted that decision by the club given the player’s age and form over the past couple of years.

Right now though, the sale isn’t looking so clever.

TBR’s View – A rare Reds blunder?

Lovren may not have been top-class, but he was always a decent backup defender.

Liverpool decided to cash in on the Croatian, presumably to try and get as much money for him as possible.

It was a risky thing to do, and now the club are facing a defensive crisis.

The most practical thing to do would probably have been to keep hold of Lovren in case of a situation like this, and now it seems Jurgen Klopp will need one of Rhys Williams or Nat Phillips to come up trumps.

Hopefully with Gomez, it will be a case of weeks rather than months for Liverpool.
