Paul Merson has now expressed his concerns over how Jurgen Klopp’s departure could affect the youngster coming through at Liverpool.

It was a weekend to remember for all involved at Liverpool when Jurgen Klopp’s young prospects got their hands on the Carabao Cup.

The Reds were able to overcome Chelsea’s efforts, but it has shown Liverpool what they will be missing next season when Klopp departs.

Merson worried about Klopp’s exit

Liverpool fans have now had a few weeks to digest the news that Klopp will be stepping away from the club at the end of the term.

However, Sunday’s victory at Wembley just emphasised his importance to the club.

Despite dealing with some huge injuries to his starting XI, the German was able to deal with the hand he was dealt and lifted the cup.

A number of Liverpool’s young prospects took to the stage at Wembley, but Merson has since told Sky Sports of his concerns for their development without Klopp: ‘The problem for them is that Klopp isn’t going to be at Anfield next season. That’s the biggest shame for those youngsters,’ he said.

‘He believes in those players, but a new manager will come in and he may not trust them. How many managers do you see give chances to kids? Not many.

‘You see it at Chelsea. They don’t trust their young players. They have gone out and spent £1bn on players when their best players are actually from the academy in Conor Gallagher and Levi Colwill.’

Liverpool’s next manager

Merson’s comments do actually present a valid argument after what unfolded in the capital on the weekend.

But there has to be a huge emphasis on who the next coach will be now based off these promising youngsters.

Klopp’s replacement surely has to carry a philosophy which will provide the youth players a path to develop themselves at the club.

Xabi Alonso has been firmly linked with a potential return to Anfield, this time as the manager.

He is an example of a manager who has not been handed an unlimited amount of money and led his team to the top of the table.

In fact, Bayer Leverkusen spent fairly modestly in the summer window and brought in players like Nathan Tella from Southampton.

The 24-year-old had previously scored just once in the Premier League, yet under Alonso’s guidance, he is performing at the top of the Bundesliga.

If Alonso is able to put his trust in players like Tella, perhaps this is a sign he could arrive at Anfield and provide the academy prospects an opportunity.
