Joe Cole has told BT Sport (broadcast on 19/10; 23:07) that Alisson was immense for Liverpool with some of the saves he made in their win over Atletico Madrid on Tuesday.

Jurgen Klopp’s men are incredibly close to booking their ticket to the knockout stages of the Champions League after a 3-2 victory.

They were not at their best in the Spanish capital. Nevertheless, a brace from Mohamed Salah and a volley from Naby Keita ensured that they got the three points.

But they also needed an inspired performance from Alisson to get across the line.

The Brazilian made an outstanding stop to deny Antoine Griezmann when he was played through during the first-half.

And he followed that with a stunning block after the break when Yannick Carrasco got on the end of a delicious one-two on the edge of the Liverpool box.

Cole was critical of Virgil van Dijk’s display against Diego Simeone’s outfit. And he suggested that the performance of Alisson was crucial to the visitors getting across the line and securing a huge win.

“That positioning from him, and that game of cat and mouse, unbelievable,” he told BT Sport, when discussing the stop from Griezmann.

“That’s what great teams have got, when one of your great players isn’t at his very, very best, your goalie here, that’s immense,” he added, on the save from Carrasco.

Liverpool difficult to stop as Alisson becomes the latest star to shine for Reds

It feels as though every member of Liverpool’s squad has taken a turn of stealing the spotlight at some stage this season.

Of course, Salah has often forced his teammates to share that stage. But Alisson was colossal on Tuesday.

He was exceptional against Atleti. But in truth, that should come as no surprise to anyone.
