New Ajax manager Alfred Schreuder has signed Calvin Bassey from Glasgow Rangers this summer but is still waiting for his work permit.

According to Dutch outlet Voetbal International, Schreuder has shared his frustration that the defender he has just signed from Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s Ibrox outfit has still not been cleared to play.

Last night Ajax finished their preparations for the new season with a win in a benefit match against Ukrainian outfit Shakhtar Donetsk.

They won 3-1, to warm up for the battle for the Johan Cruyff Shield against PSV on Saturday, but the manager was not entirely satisfied.

“Of course that’s annoying,” he said.

“We had counted on him to be able to make minutes, but unfortunately that was not yet the case,” he continued about Bassey.

The player himself is likely frustrated too about not being able to get started as soon as possible with his new club after leaving Rangers.

As for Rangers, they are looking to get into the Champions League group stage, where they could well come up against Bassey and Ajax.

That would be a huge boost to their season, and they face Union Saint-Gilloise in the third qualifying round, with the first leg on Tuesday.

Last season saw them have an exceptional European run and getting into the group stage could set up some more famous Ibrox nights.
