'Terrific' striker Newcastle reportedly want scored more goals than Salah and Kane in 2019/20
Newcastle United have been linked with a whole host of names already and the latest one to come out of the rumour mill is Rangers star Alfredo Morelos.
90min claimed earlier this week that the Colombian is on the Magpies’ wish list ahead of the January transfer window. The new Newcastle owners are expected by many to make a huge mark, and signing Morelos would be a decent start.
The Rangers centre-forward has been one of the best players in the Scottish Premiership over the last few years. His performances in the 2019/20 campaign, however, is what makes him really stand out.
Newcastle-linked Morelos scored more goals than Kane and Salah in 2019/20
Rangers stunned the world by beating Celtic to the league title last season and Morelos played a fairly big part.
The 25-year-old scored 17 goals and provided 13 assists in all competitions, which is a phenomenal record, but what he did in the previous season was even better.
In the 2019/20 campaign, Morelos played 47 games in all competitions. He scored a hugely impressive 29 goals and provided 10 assists, making him one of the most prolific strikers in Europe then.
To put Morelos’ goal tally from that campaign into perspective, Liverpool superstar Mohamed Salah scored 23 and assisted 13, while Harry Kane, arguably the Premier League’s best striker, scored 24 and assisted just two in the very same season.
Should the Magpies sign Morelos?
While the rumour mill on social media is linking Newcastle to the likes of Erling Haaland and Kylian Mbappe, a move for Morelos isn’t really exciting enough. However, he’s worth taking a look at.
The Premier League has seen players from Scotland come in and perform tremendously well. John McGinn, Kieran Tierney, Andy Robertson and most recently, Odsonne Edouard, have impressed after coming to England, and there’s no reason why Morelos can’t do the same.
Morelos, labelled as ‘terrific‘ by Steven Gerrard, would be a very interesting addition to Newcastle United. He’ll have just 18 months left on his contract as well in January, which could help the Magpies in potential transfer negotiations.
