Arsenal defender Gabriel Magalhaes has claimed that he snubbed a move to Manchester United before joining Arsenal last year.

The Brazilian was heavily linked with a move to the Premier League before Arsenal stepped in. He was reportedly attracting interest from Everton and Manchester United, but he only wanted the Gunners.

Gabriel, labelled as ‘terrific‘ by Mikel Arteta, sat down for an interview with TalkSport this week and he is adamant that choosing Arsenal over United was the right decision.

He even revealed that messages from fans before he made the switch convinced him that the Emirates was the perfect place for him.

The lowdown on Scotland's THREE men hunting first caps

Gabriel Magalhaes: Manchester United wanted me but I chose Arsenal

The former Lille man told TalkSport: “I’d always dreamt of playing in the Premier League and everyone knows Arsenal as one of the top clubs in the world.

“It’s true that Manchester United were also interested, but I was always focused on joining Arsenal. The fans sent some messages in the build-up and that was very important in my decision.

“Having been here for some time now, I am certain I made the right choice. I am very happy here, I’ve made some fantastic friendships and I hope we can win some trophies.”

Gabriel has an ‘incredible future’

Gabriel joined Arsenal after months of inactivity in the French league due to the pandemic. He was rushed in to start against Fulham on the opening day last season, even before he could learn English.

The Brazilian stepped in and was brilliant on the day and in his first few months at the Emirates. He has been excellent in the games he has played this season as well, so much so, that Arteta publicly claimed that he is a player with an ‘incredible future’. (

Gabriel is expected to start alongside Ben White as Arsenal head to Brighton this evening. Arteta’s men seem to have turned their season around, but the Seagulls are on a roll as well.

It will be a very difficult game for the Gunners, but if the Brazilian has a good game, they should come away with the win.
