Reported Newcastle United target Mark Gillespie has described his future as “up in the air”, as reported by the Daily Record.

The Scottish outlet reported in April that current Newcastle boss Steve Bruce had earmarked the former Magpies academy goalkeeper for a return to St James’ Park this summer.

Gillespie hails from Newcastle and began his footballing journey at the Magpies’ academy before going on to start his professional career with Carlisle United.

The 6ft 1in stopper made 180 appearances for the Cumbrians between 2010 and 2017 before a season at Walsall and then a switch north of the border to Motherwell, where he has tallied up 67 appearances so far.

Gillespie’s contract is due to expire this summer and, in wake of current events, he admits he’s none the wiser as to what his future will bring.

“My future is up in the air at the moment until everyone knows the situation with the wider game,” he told the Daily Record.

“Clubs, players, managers don’t know what’s coming next week, never mind next season.

“Once it becomes clear where the leagues stand and things like that there will be conversations to be had.”

Although Gillespie may not be in the same category of high-profile, marquee players that Newcastle have been linked with in recent weeks, he would no doubt be a great addition to the Magpies ranks.

When you consider that plenty of England’s top clubs have signed veteran keepers happy to be second or third-choice and pass on their experience on the training ground and in the dressing room, it makes sense for Newcastle to be linked with a stopper like Gillespie.

A highly-rated keeper previously described as “terrific” by Motherwell boss Stephen Robinson and “outstanding” by former Carlisle manager Greg Abbott, he may well feel he has unfinished business at Newcastle.
