'If he's worth': Pundit claims Arsenal new boy on par with £45m star Tottenham sold
Stevie Nicol has suggested that Arsenal new signing Ben White is on par with Kyle Walker who was sold by Tottenham in 2017, as he told ESPN.
The Anfield legend claimed that if Walker, who Spurs sold to Manchester City for £45 million (BBC Sport), is worth around that figure then so is Arsenal’s latest recruit.
Arsenal have paid £50 million of White’s services from Brighton (Sky Sports), despite the Englishman being behind the likes of Harry Maguire, John Stones, Conor Coady and Tyrone Mings in England’s pecking order.
This is what Nicol had to say about Arsenal landing White’s signature, as he compared him to Walker.
“I wouldn’t have had no problem if he had started at centre-back for England at the Euros,” said Nicol. “He’s 23 and you don’t get anything for nothing these days.
“And if Kyle Walker is worth £50 million, what four years ago? Then Ben White’s £50 million. He has got ten years ahead of him.”
Well, Walker was 27 when Manchester City snapped him up, but he was a far more established Premier League player than White.
The rampaging right-back had a successful loan spell at Aston Villa, including several strong seasons under the guidance of Mauricio Pochettino at White Hart Lane.
But Arsenal have taken the risk to snap up White after one full season in England’s top-flight, which is the club sticking their chest wideout.
The former Leeds loanee walks straight into Arsenal’s XI, but not only does he have to produce from the get-go.
But he also has to make those around him a lot better, if he does neither then he’s in for a long season and so is Mikel Arteta.
