‘Tears’, ‘lovely’: Celtic response to Rangers divides opinion among these fans

The title race may be over, but with the season’s third derby on the horizon the pettiness shows no signs of slowing down.

The goalless draw between Celtic and Dundee United at Tannadice on Sunday ensured that the match on March 21 will be a dead rubber, but it’s unlikely that the occasion will be a damp squib.

Amid controversy surrounding celebrations from Rangers fans at Ibrox and George Square over the weekend, the club’s director Douglas Park sent a letter to First Minister Nicola Sturgeon outlining the steps taken by his club to prevent mass rule-breaking.

As quoted by Glasgow Live, Park said: “Police intelligence indicated that some fans would congregate in groups given the fact that is not only a historic achievement, but also due to behaviour from the other half of the Old Firm outside Parkhead in December.”

That reference to Celtic evidently did not sit well with “the other half”.

In a tweet posted on Tuesday night, they said: “ Celtic Football Club Statement: We’re not half of anything…

“Not our problem. #OneClubSince1888.”

Naturally, this went down well with Celtic supporters.

Rangers fans, not so much.

To say that the tweet – which has been pinned to the top of Celtic’s account – has divided opinion would be a considerable understatement.

Here’s how supporters on both halves of the divide have reacted.

Elsewhere in his letter, Park said: “I am at a loss as to what more Rangers Football Club could have done to limit the reaction to winning our historic 55th league title. It has been widely accepted amongst the football family that this is one of the greatest modern day sporting achievements and I believe that this should not be downplayed.

“Nevertheless, I acknowledge the Covid-19 pandemic and am aware of the dangers and impact on public health and safety.

“Let me be very clear, we have done everything we can as a club to limit the impact of Covid-19 within our bubble.

“You will be aware that when players have flouted rules, we were proactive in handling the situation and ensuring we did everything we could to maintain a level of leadership and professionalism which would be befitting of this 150-year-old institution.”
