Tottenham Hotspur dealt out an excellent 3-0 win over Manchester United yesterday. It was a performance epitomised by ruthlessness in front of goal from Spurs. Harry Kane and Lucas Moura took the plaudits with an outstanding attacking display.
But at the back for Tottenham, Toby Alderweireld also deserves universal acclaim.
The Belgian defender came into the season under a cloud regarding his future at the club. However, he showed at the World Cup just what he is capable of and against United was in top form.
Excellent in the air, brilliant with his distribution and timely in the challenge it was the perfect centre-half performance.

One occasion, in particular, was brilliant from the 29-year-old.
Manchester United strung a decent aerial move together and Jesse Lingard looked set to smash in from close range. It would have made for a nervy last 20 minutes for Tottenham.
But Alderweireld gobbled up the yards and made a last-ditch challenge to poke the ball over for a corner. It was supreme defending and the type that saw him once dubbed the best in the Premier League.
Of course, Manchester United were heavily linked with Alderweireld this summer. Based on this display Jose Mourinho will be wishing that the club had made good on the rumours and snapped him up, regardless of the apparent £55 million price-tag.
