Team of the Week: Alisson lives up to his price-tag

Liverpool finally have a goalkeeper worthy of winning a Premier League title.

Liverpool are looking like genuine title contenders this season. After making the Champions League final last term and getting the best over Manchester City on their way, it immediately became clear Jurgen Klopp’s men were set for a good campaign in 2018-19.

However, one major area of concern was between the sticks. Loris Karius was at fault for two goals conceded in the Champions League final defeat to Real Madrid. It was not the first time the German had dropped a clanger. With Simon Mignolet hardly any more reliable, Liverpool got the chequebook out.

The Reds splashed out £66.9 million to bring Alisson in from Roma. It was the world record transfer for a goalkeeper, before Kepa Arrizabalaga moved to Chelsea.

At the weekend, against Brighton, Alisson showed just why Liverpool were willing to pay so much.

Liverpool ground out a 1-0 win against Brighton this weekend. But they very nearly threw away two points. Late in the game, Pascal Gross met a wonderful cross from Martin Montoya with a bullet header. But Alisson clawed the ball away from goal with a superb reaction stop.

It was the type of moment pundits always talk about when they say a good keeper can win you trophies.

At the end of the season, fans might look at that save from Alisson and say the two points v Brighton were invaluable.

Alisson is looking like the answer to Liverpool’s prayers.
