TBR View: Why Tottenham have the ideal trump card in race to sign Lorenzo Insigne, player-plus-cash deal?

Tottenham are reportedly battling Liverpool in the race to sign Napoli sensation and Euro 2020 finalist Lorenzo Insigne. The pocket-sized attacker has entered the final year of his Napoli contract. Spurs are reportedly in talks – but could they get Insigne by offering a player in return?

Insigne, 30, has been sensational over the past 12 months. Scoring 19 goals and creating 11 more under Gennaro Gattuso in 2020-21, he has continued that form in Euro 2020 – scoring two in five outings. But his long-term future is in doubt and after 397 Napoli games, he could leave this summer.

Corriere Dello Sport say that Tottenham and Barcelona are in talks, while Liverpool are now also interested in Insigne, as per Area Napoli. Even Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis has stated that Insigne could leave this summer. Failing to sell, Napoli run the risk of letting him go for free.

Why Tottenham have a trump card in signing Insigne ahead of Liverpool – in Erik Lamela

Corriere dello Sport claimed in April that Argentina international Lamela is likely to leave Tottenham. He finds himself in a similar situation to Insigne, in the final year of his contract. The report claims Napoli are keen – and that Spurs will accept offers upto £8.5million.

It is a trump card, then. Lamela can be included in a deal for Insigne – not only because Spurs need to get rid, but also because Napoli want him. It hands the Italians an instant replacement for Insigne, as well as some cash for his services. It is a move that suits all parties involved.

Insigne gets his big move to the Premier League, which he deserves following the past 12 months. Napoli get a player they want, and money. Tottenham get a player they want, and get rid of another they don’t want. Lamela moves back to Italy, and increases his game time. It makes sense.

Offering Lamela in a deal for Insigne will surely see Tottenham beat Liverpool in the race to get the Euro 2020 finalist, this summer.
