Aston Villa have reportedly joined the race to sign Marseille midfielder Maxime Lopez this summer, with Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham United also linked – but Villa winning such a race would present Tottenham with a big transfer boost.
Spanish outlet Estadio Deportivo claim all three Premier League sides are interested in signing 22-year-old Lopez. It is believed he could go for a bargain figure, with the Daily Star saying the France Under-21 star could go for as cheap as £10million.
However, Lopez is hardly going to change Tottenham’s failings over the past 12 months – especially given he has been dropped by Andre Villas-Boas of late. The Marseille manager has afforded Lopez just four starts over the past 17 ligue 1 matches.
Failing to start for Marseille, then, means he has no chance of breaking into Jose Mourinho’s team. Certainly, Lopez – who is naturally a central midfielder but has also been used as a right winger – would be a decent addition for Villa.
Indeed, Lopez could be targeted by Villa with captain Jack Grealish’s future in doubt ahead of the summer window. With Villa perilously close to suffering relegation, Grealish is expected to finally leave the Midlands club.
At the start of the season, Tottenham were once again linked with Grealish – with the Mirror reporting Tottenham were keeping tabs on him, after coming within an inch of signing Grealish in 2018. The report claims he has a £60million buyout clause.
Given that Lopez can play out wide and in the middle of the park, he could be eyed as a replacement for Grealish in the coming months. If Villas-Boas sanctions a move for Lopez to move to Villa, with Villa the best place for Lopez, that could help Spurs.
Indeed, the former Tottenham manager could hand Spurs a massive boost in their pursuit of Grealish – by letting Villa sign Grealish’s potential replacement in Lopez.
