TBR view: What next for Aston Villa after falling into the relegation zone

Aston Villa dramatically fell into the relegation zone on Sunday after losing 6-1 to Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City side. It continues a poor run of form for the Villains, but where do they go from here?

The club has lost two of their most important players in Wesley and Tom Heaton to long term injuries and are seriously feeling the impacts on the pitch. They have lost three of their last five games and are now sat in 18th, one point adrift of Watford in 17th.

Villa desperately need some new faces through the door – and fast. First and foremost, they are in desperate need of a new striker. Former Villain Christian Benteke is unlikely to provide the goals they need, so Smith should consider making a concrete move for Chelsea man Michy Batshuayi. The Belgian would certainly bring a greater goal threat to the side and could link up well with Jack Grealish.

The 24-year-old English midfielder is another area that needs to be focused on. He has been a shining light in an otherwise disappointing season for the club and they simply cannot let him go in January. If they do, it is likely to be the final nail in the relegation coffin.

Smith simply has to change something at Villa Park, before it’s too late. His side looks void of confidence and are in real danger of ending up back in the Championship next season.
