Leeds United are reportedly in the hunt for another new signing, with AZ Alkmaar midfielder Teun Koopmeiners seemingly a major target for the Whites.
That is according to a report from The Telegraph, who claim that the AZ captain is being targeted to bolster the midfield options available to Marcelo Bielsa this season. The set-piece specialist, who scored 16 goals last season, would be valued at over £10 million by his current club.
Intrepid fans even spotted Leeds United director of football Victor Orta at Manchester airport yesterday, seemingly on his way to Amsterdam, where negotiations for the Dutchman could easily take place – although, this is just conjecture for the time being.
But it is a deal that would make sense, not least because Koopmeiners is absolutely perfect fr Bielsa’s style of play.
In particular, the versatile nature of the Dutchman would make him adaptable to any of Bielsa’s formations and tactical choices.
Koopmeiners is best suited to a central midfield role but can play in any one of them. Strongest as a holding midfielder, he can also operate in a dynamic manner, similar to Adam Forshaw or Mateusz Klich whilst he can also play as an attacking midfielder.
Koopmeiners is also happy slotting in at centre-back, especially in a back-three, which Bielsa is known to sometimes adopt.
Whilst not playing regularly in the role, it is also fair to assume that the cultured player could slot in at left-back, where his wand of a left-boot would be a considerable weapon in offense.
To put it short, Koopmeiners is the ultimate Bielsa player. Capable of playing in several positions with little or no degradation to his game.
Leeds United should be hoping this deal can get done.
