TBR View: Tottenham star gives Jose Mourinho conundrum after latest cameo

Giovani Lo Celso has been in fine form from the bench of late.

Tottenham continued their excellent form on Saturday as they beat Manchester City 2-0 at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium with Son Heung-min and Giovani Lo Celso scoring the goals.

The Argentine playmaker scored his goal with practically his first touch; finding the net just three minutes after being unleashed from the bench by Jose Mourinho.

Lo Celso has endured a relatively frustrating time of things since signing for Tottenham from Real Betis in the summer of 2019.

He has started just five games during 2020/21 having suffered an injury early into the campaign which ruled him out for several weeks.

Last season he scored twice and registered three assists from 37 appearances during a campaign riddled with inconsistency and niggling injuries.

He did do enough to convince Tottenham to part with £27 million to sign him permanently at the half-way stage of his initial loan spell.

At 24 there is a seriously talented player in the Tottenham ranks but how best to utilise him has so far eluded both Mauricio Pochettino and Mourinho.

The Portuguese boss hasn’t got a deal wrong during his time at Tottenham. If anyone will relish the challenge of transforming Lo Celso into a Spurs star, it’s Mourinho.

Versatile

On Saturday he entered the action in the No.10 role but has been known to operate as a central midfielder; as he did during the recent win over West Brom following his introduction.

He showed during his 25-minute cameo on Saturday exactly what he is capable of and that throws up a conundrum for Mourinho.

On £75,000-a-week, Lo Celso continues to show exactly what he is all about. Just lately he’s certainly showcased a desire to be starting games.

The challenge for Mourinho is not only where he plays but also who he plays in place of.

Lo Celso’s situation is an intriguing one and right now he’s a player handing Mourinho an almighty headache.
