Kristoffer Ajer has become a Celtic favourite over the past couple of seasons but his agent’s comments this week are likely to throw that strong relationship out the window – and Tottenham Hotspur should take advantage, having been linked in 2018.
Ajer, 21, was signed by Brendan Rodgers in the manager’s first summer as Celtic boss from Norwegian side Start – and has since clocked up 129 senior appearances for the Hoops. He has become first choice alongside Christopher Jullien.
Despite having a contract at Parkhead until the summer of 2022, Ajer’s agent Tore Pedersen has been sensationally quoted by The Scottish Sun as saying that Ajer will definitely leave the Hoops in the summer – and will not sign a new deal.
“He will not extend his contract with Celtic and will leave this summer,” Pedersen said. “There are several clubs who are interested, but I can’t go into their names. There are many who have followed him for a long period.”
One of those clubs who may have followed Ajer for a long period is Tottenham, who were first linked with a move for the midfielder-turned-defender back in 2018. TeamTalk reported that Tottenham were keen, as were Borussia Dortmund.
Two years on, Ajer would be a stunning signing for Tottenham if they could get a deal across the line. That is because Spurs are struggling in defence and need some new blood, especially with Jan Vertonghen due to leave at the end of the season.
Vertonghen is close to the final three months of his contract at Spurs, and it remains to be seen if a new deal will be offered to the Belgian left-footer. Davinson Sanchez has struggled, while Toby Alderweireld has not been his usual excellent self.
The Sun claimed back in November that Leicester and Rodgers were planning a £20million bid for Ajer, and at such a bargain price, Tottenham should be snapping Celtic’s hand off for Ajer. A move now might happen, given his agent’s comments.
