TBR View: Tottenham Hotspur must cash in on Harry Winks if £40m interest emerges again

In the summer a link began to emerge suggesting that Manchester City could be ready to make a move for Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Harry Winks.

As reported by The Sun, a £40 million offer was being considered by City for a player Pep Guardiola had publicly lauded in the past.

The Manchester Evening News later made it clear that despite Guardiola’s fondness for the player, they were not in the market for a new central midfielder in the summer.

Tottenham would have been jumping the gun slightly if they also made a decision to sell Winks. At the time, Tanguy Ndombele’s future was in doubt whilst it was not clear how impactful Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg was going to be.

But if City were to make an offer for Winks anywhere in the region of £40 million for Winks now, then Tottenham would surely have to consider taking it.

The England international has struggled to find his best form since a string of injuries and appears to be on the fringes under Jose Mourinho.

His most recent appearance against Royal Antwerp was universally panned by supporters, who feel that the 24-year-old might be struggling to rediscover his spark.

With Hojbjerg and Ndombele thriving, and talented youngster Oliver Skipp looking the real deal on loan at Norwich City, Winks could be an easy way for Tottenham to make some money.

It would be a brave move as Winks could end up thriving wherever he ends up going, which could be doubly embarrassing at a close rival like City. However, at present, it is hard to see Winks living up to his early potential, especially under Mourinho, and his value will only diminish as time passes by.

The report from the MEN in August suggested the talk of a Winks exit was emanating from the Tottenham camp. It would be no surprise if the North London club began considering an exit for the midfielder based on his recent displays.
