TBR View – Tottenham didn’t sign Eze and Bowen but they should land Ollie Watkins

Tottenham are reportedly keen to bolster their ranks with the signing of Brentford striker Ollie Watkins before the transfer window closes.

According to reports over the weekend (The Sun on Sunday; Page 61), Jose Mourinho is keen to add a striker to his ranks and is considering a move for the £22 million-rated Bees performer.

Watkins scored 26 goals last season with Brentford reaching the Championship play-off final where they were beaten by Fulham.

That defeat makes it almost impossible for the Bees to keep hold of Watkins and that should work in Tottenham’s favour.

It would be a real achievement for the Championship should a club the size of Tottenham move to sign one of the division’s top-performing players.

For Spurs, it might represent a situation of third time lucky two, after missing out on two second-tier starts recently.

Tottenham were linked with a move for Jarrod Bowen in January (Sky Sports) but the player eventually signed for West Ham.

He was in decent form towards the end of the campaign, registering four assists and pinning down a regular spot in David Moyes’ team.

Earlier this summer, Tottenham were set for another assault on the Championship with QPR playmaker Eberechi Eze linked with a move (The Sun).

After baulking at the £20 million valuation, Tottenham once again opted against signing the Championship performer allowing him to join Crystal Palace instead.

Third time lucky

Tottenham’s striker search should lead them to Watkins, who would surely relish the chance to sign for the club.

He is quick, powerful, scores goals and can also operate on the wing if necessary.

Thomas Frank raved about him last August, telling the Wandsworth Times: “He’s like a Ronaldo-type, that he can play as a nine or he can play to the side, or he can play as a 10, but because he’s so versatile he has abilities you can benefit off in all positions.”

Whoever is added to the ranks will need to be fully aware that Harry Kane is the first choice and with Spurs in four competitions, Watkins would still get plenty of game time.

Tottenham have flirted with recruiting Championship stars previously but Watkins is one they simply can’t afford to let slip away.
