TBR View: Tottenham are reliant on Moussa Sissoko, who was previously linked with exit

Moussa Sissoko is certainly a player that has had his ups and downs at Tottenham since he joined them in 2016 from Newcastle United, but in the process has become somewhat of a fan favourite for the way he’s bounced back from difficulties.

The 31-year-old went from a total flop under former boss Mauricio Pochettino into a key contributor in the centre of the park and he’s got one of the best engines around for his hard running in the midfield, even if he’s not the most pleasing player on the eye.

He managed to win over current manager Jose Mourinho when he took charge last season and finished the campaign in decent form.

But the French midfielder was linked with a possible exit in the summer window, with the Daily Star reporting in August that Spurs would consider bids of around £18million for his sale to help raise transfer funds.

The central midfielder remained with the North London club beyond the window and what’s happened since is that he’s become a player Mourinho is so reliant on.

Sissoko was overlooked for the opening few matches of the season, but he’s played every minute of the last four consecutive Premier League games and he’s looking so vital in the team at present.

The all-action powerhouse has a great combination alongside summer signing Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, while Tanguy Ndombele also slots in as the attack-minded one in a midfield trio.

There are players such as Giovani Lo Celso or Harry Winks that could drop into the central midfield area to add some extra guile and creativity, but it’s hard for anybody to replicate the physical presence of Sissoko with his aggressive and non-stop approach.

He fits the system really nicely right now in the best XI and it looks a great job they kept him over the summer.
