TBR View: Spurs may welcome Sokratis joining Juventus amid report on their interest

While Jose Mourinho will soon turn his attention to the Arsenal players his Tottenham Hotspur squad could face this weekend, there are a couple of members of Mikel Arteta’s side he will not need to make any plans for.

One of those will be Sokratis Papastathopoulos, with the Greece international left out of the Gunners’ Premier League squad for this half of the season.

His omission certainly means that it is quite easy to imagine him leaving the Emirates during the January transfer window. And he has actually been linked with a surprise move this week.

Calciomercato. It recently reported that Juventus had included Sokratis on their list of potential January targets. It was noted that the Old Lady are waiting to find out how serious Giorgio Chiellini’s injury is, and are preparing to strengthen next month.

The report claimed that David Alaba is the number one target. But the Arsenal man – who earns £92,000-a-week, according to Spotrac – is also on their radar, as is Nikola Milenkovic.

That should alert Mourinho. It was claimed by La Nazione in November that the Tottenham boss also wants the Fiorentina man in January.

So it would appear that Spurs could end up battling Juve for Milenkovic. Therefore, there is potentially a chance that it could actually be Sokratis who hands Spurs a transfer boost.

The Arsenal defender may tick the boxes for a side looking for a low-cost option when the window opens. So if Juve do decide that they do not want to spend too much, a move for Sokratis may appeal.

And that could in turn take one of Spurs’ rivals out of the running if they are indeed looking at a January move for Milenkovic.
