Mikel Arteta is reportedly keen on making a move for Manchester City defender John Stones. According to The Sun, the Arsenal boss has made the 25-year-old his top priority this month in an attempt to improve the club’s struggling defence.
The Gunners are currently sat 10th in the Premier League and in need of January additions. However, Stones might not be the player Arsenal need. Here is why he will only cause problems at the Emirates.
The England international is known for how comfortable he is on the ball. Although this is an admirable quality, especially for a team looking to play the way Arteta’s side is, it can cause trouble. Stones tends to give the ball away in dangerous areas when he would be better off clearing it to safety.
This is a problem that can be mitigated when the Manchester City man is partnered alongside a reliable centre-back. The issue for Arsenal is that he will likely line-up alongside David Luiz.
The Brazilian has several brilliant qualities but makes some incredibly rash decisions and is too similar to Stones. They would not compliment each other well as a centre-back partnership and could cause even more problems at the back for Arsenal.
Signing the out of favour Manchester City defender would improve Arsenal’s defence in terms of outright ability. He is a top defender, but Arteta will need to be careful who he plays alongside him. It will be interesting to see if the Spaniard looks to change the shape if Stones comes in at Arsenal this month.
