TBR View: Signing Diogo Jota over £45m star looks like Liverpool masterstroke

Michael Edwards is prone to a transfer masterclass and is arguably one of the greatest off-field elements about Liverpool Football Club.

His decision to overlook Timo Werner in the summer and land Diogo Jota instead is looking like another stroke of genius from the transfer guru.

Liverpool were heavily linked with a move for Germany international Werner before he eventually signed for Chelsea.

Many thought the Reds were mightily foolish not to sign the 24-year-old but not Edwards. He bided his time and eventually pounced on a player who now looks tailor-made for the Reds.

Whilst Werner is going about his business at Stamford Bridge, Jota is busy doing great things at Anfield.

In midweek the 23-year-old scored a stunning hat-trick during a 5-0 win over Atalanta in the Champions League.

Jota now has seven goals in 10 outings for the Reds, with Werner on seven goals from 11 game for the Blues.

There’s no saying Werner would have fit the style which Jurgen Klopp likes to play, with the German more accustomed to playing as a centre-forward.

The beauty of Jota is that he can fulfil any of Liverpool’s three more advanced roles with absolute aplomb.

At 23 there is still bags of time for him to continue improving and already supporters are discussing Jota replacing Roberto Firmino.

The Portugal international has started just five games for the Reds and is already adhering himself to the club’s supporters.

He is showing he is capable of lighting up Anfield and prioritising Jota over the signing of Werner is looking very shrewd indeed.

Edwards looks to have done it again.
