TBR View: Should Tottenham revive 2019 interest in Sander Berge?

Tottenham were interested in Sander Berge back in 2019 and actually had a bid of £13.7 million rejected by Genk, according to Team Talk.

The Norwegian whizz eventually signed for Sheffield United for £22 million in January 2020 and has enjoyed a steady start to life in the Premier League.

Berge is typically a holding midfielder and has made 29 appearances during 2020 for the Blades.

Now, some news has emerged that suggests his long-term future isn’t likely to be at Bramall Lane.

Norwegian media outlet VG have suggested that it’s ‘very unlikely’ he will stay in South Yorkshire beyond this season – regardless of Sheffield United’s fate.

The report also suggests that several Premier League clubs are ‘closely following’ the youngster.

It doesn’t state which top-flight managers are monitoring the situation but could Tottenham revive their interest?

Since they last pursued his signature, Tottenham have changed manager.

That doesn’t mean Jose Mourinho won’t fancy another midfielder for his engine room though.

Berge fits the bill of a Tottenham addition quite nicely. He is young, comfortable in possession of the ball and would ultimately boast Premier League experience.

Spotrac claims that the 22-year-old only earns £32,000-a-week at Bramall Lane and that would be a drop in the ocean for Spurs.

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg has been a revelation since arriving from Southampton during the summer.

Right now, the man with 24 Norway caps to his name wouldn’t be ousting his fellow Scadanavian out of the team.

He would, however, be a very useful squad player for Mourinho and bolstering his ranks will be something he is keen to do.

United have yet to win in 12 Premier League games this season and relegation looks like a foregone concluision.

Mourinho spent well in the summer and landing Berge could see him complete another shrewd capture.
