TBR View: Samuel Umtiti could be brilliant summer signing for Liverpool
Liverpool’s season has been nothing short of a disaster and the summer will be a time for reflection and preparing to regain their Premier League title during 2021/22,
The Reds have relinquished their maiden crown with a whimper and Jurgen Klopp’s squad depth simply hasn’t been good enough.
As a result, he will work alongside Michael Edwards and FSG this summer to ensure the squad is stronger going into next season.
One area that could be in need of strengthening is at the back. Injuries to Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez have decimated the central defensive department.
Although both of those players will return next season, Klopp would surely welcome a stellar addition into his defensive ranks.
According to Mundo Deportivo, Liverpool are considering a move for Barcelona defender Samuel Umtiti.
The Catalan giants are keen to raise some funds this summer and hope to cash in on the French centre-back.
Umtiti has fallen down the pecking order under Ronald Koeman. After recovering from a knee problem he’s struggled to force his way into the reckoning, featuring just 13 times this season.
His quality is undeniable though and with a World Cup winners medal to his name, he could prove to be a game-changing signing for Liverpool.
Signing him might not come cheap. Barca will demand a decent fee for him, whilst he currently earns around £200,000-a-week at the Nou Camp.
Liverpool must ensure the squad is well-stocked though and Umtiti has the quality to play alongside Van Dijk at centre-back.
The disappointments of this season can quickly be consigned to history but it will take a positive summer and a good start to next season.
Landing Umtiti would be a great way to kick off the transfer window for Liverpool.
